Introduction To Polish Music, Part I

May 22, 2017

A lot of foreigners living in Poland told me how much they would like to know something more about polish music and polish musicians. Today I would like to present one of my favourite polish singers – Anna Maria Jopek. This artist is well known in the world, she represented Poland in Eurovison in 1997 with the song “Ale jestem”. She recorded with many famous artists, like for example Pat Metheny, Mino Cinelu, Richard Bona, Christian McBride, Dhafer Youssef, Branford Marsalis. If someone would like to know more about her albums, you can look at her webside: www.annamariajopek.pl.

I like very much to listen her melodic, harmonious songs especially in autumn and winter. You can hide yourself from the cold and frost outside deeply in her music and her warm voice. Today I translated for you one song from one of her latest albums called “Polanna”. This album is inspired by polish folk music. It is interesting that Anna Maria is generally singing in Polish and giving concerts all over the world in Polish but not understanding Polish is not a barrier for the audience to feel her music! Because the music is a common language!

The lyrics of this song comes from the sentimental poem from the XIX century written by Franciszek Karpiński. It is about the meeting of two beloved. Enjoy the music!

„Laura i Filon” from the CD  „Polanna”  (www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4TACazmgfU)

Już miesiąc zaszedł, psy się uśpiły
l coś tam klaszcze za borem,
Pewnie mnie czeka mój Filon miły
Pod umówionym jaworem.

Nie będę sobie warkocz trefiła,
Tylko włos zwiążę splątany,
Bo bym się jeszcze bardziej spóźniła,
A mój tam tęskni kochany.

Już miesiąc zaszedł, psy się uśpiły
l coś tam klaszcze za borem,
Pewnie mnie czeka mój Filon miły
Pod umówionym jaworem.

Translation:

The moon went down, the dogs are sleeping,
something is clapping in the forest,
For sure this is my bellowed Filon waiting for me
under the sycamore tree.

I am not going to braid my plait,
I will only comb my hair quickly,
Because I am afraid to be late

And I do not want he pines for me so long.

The moon went down, the dogs are sleeping,
something is clapping in the forest,
For sure this is my bellowed Filon waiting for me.
